High-Risk Youth Living at Home: What Works?

3 Workshops offered in Spring 1999

This 2-day workshop provides a new Contextual paradigm for understanding the developmental context, risk factors, treatment and prevention of teen violence and abuse. The session incorporates a critical analysis of the latest research in the field of community services for high-risk youth.

In addition, the presentation explores in depth how this perspective is applied in practice to the delivery of intensive family-based services for these youth and their families. Extensive handouts and background readings will be provided.

Via large and small group discussion, the use of clinical examples, videos and behavioural rehearsals, participants are given the opportunity to:

  • Compare the myths vs. realities of teen violence and abuse.

  • Share experiences and challenge each others' values, attitudes, and beliefs.

  • Integrate "practice wisdom" with a contextual, multisystemic perspective.

  • Enhance observational and teaching skills critical to working with high-risk youth.

Note: Due to the overlap in content, this workshop is not recommended for those who have taken my 1997 Safeguards workshop "Understanding Teen Violence in the Community".
